Shipyards Plaza
North Vancouver, BC. 2019A Multi-layered, all-season plaza, the Shipyards provides an important covered public open space along the North Vancouver waterfront. The thoughtful development is co-run by Quay North Development and The City of North Vancouver, and includes retail, restaurants, office space, a hotel, and CapU Lonsdale, Capilano University's sattelite location.
The Plaza becomes an ice-skating rink in the winter and a splash pad in the summer. Features include the 'flotilla' of ship-like forms which float through the space as sculptures for sitting, climbing, splashing... It is an extremely well used space, both through programming by the City and the spontaneous magic of urban public space. This place provided a valuable community amenity during the pandemic.
